The Certificate III in Equine Nursing is a specialised program intended for the thoroughbred sector of the horse industry, as well as veterinary practices that specialise in equine services. It aims to provide students with advanced vocational education in the underpinning knowledge, practical and technical skills required of an Equine Nurse. Graduates will be able to carryout equine medical, surgical and anaesthetic nursing, as well as equine clinical pathology and radiographic procedures working under minimal supervision. They will provide intensive care for foals and horses, as well as clean and maintain an equine facility, and implement quality assurance methods and OHS procedures.

Career Opportunities
Graduates of the course will be able to perform the duties of a competent equine nurse working under minimal supervision. They will be able to enter the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing with significant credit for units achieved in this course.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should be working in the thoroughbred industry, or a veterinary practice specialising in equine services. Veterinary Nurses working in general practices may also apply, and may be required to undertake a suitable equine related practical placement.
Duration & Delivery
This is an 18 month part time course.
Assessment
Participants are assessed via completion of required tasks and a demonstration of skills, eg. Written and verbal assignments, practical work, classroom participation, projects and/or written tests.
Practical Placement
Students who have limited exposure to equine nursing, will have the opportunity to complete Practical Placements to gain expertise in related practical competencies.
Qualification
The Certificate III in Equine Nursing is a nationally recognised qualification.

Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC)
RCC is an assessment process that involves re-assessment of a previously gained accredited qualification that may no longer be recognised by official bodies. If you have an earlier qualification and have current industry experience, the RCC process will involve assessment of your prior qualification against the current qualification and if successful will result in a full or partial upgrade to the current qualification. Contact the teaching department for further advice on RCC or request an information brochure from the Customer Service Centre.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
RPL is an evidence gathering assessment process where an individual's skills and knowledge in a specific vocational area are assessed against a unit or units of a nationally accredited training package. RPL is specifically for applicants who have skills and knowledge in a vocational area that may enable them to gain part or all of a formal qualification thus recognizing their non-formal and informal prior learning.
