Shelley Calwell
With 20 years experience in the equine industry Shelley Calwell moved easily into working for an equine vet at Euroa. Shelley had owned horses since she was 10 years old and showed Appaloosas, so is no stranger to the equine industry.
She worked with her husband on a several studs, including a thoroughbred stud in NSW where they were foaling down 300 mares a year. During her time on the studs Shelley would often assist visiting vets in treating the horses.
Deciding on a change of pace they bought their own farm at Longwood near Euroa to run cattle and sheep and breed Clydesdale horses. Out of the blue Shelley received a phone call from one of the vets she had assisted previously who was setting up her own practice and wanted Shelley to come and work for her. The offer came at the right time and she jumped at the chance to help set up Seven Creeks Equine Veterinary Clinic.
"I knew nothing about vet nursing so when Stacey asked me to do the Certificate III in Equine Nursing course with the NCEE I was excited to have the opportunity to learn more," said Shelley.
"Stacey helped me get back in study with some one-on-one tutoring. I hadn’t been the best student at school but the staff at the NCEE are excellent, they are great teachers and always willing to help," she said.
"Just understanding why things are done the way they are and how to do them properly was enlightening. While I understood about horses I didn’t know about anatomy and how everything works together."
When she finishes the course in 2007 Shelley is looking forward to putting everything into practice in their new surgery complex at the clinic. "I really enjoy working here and can’t see myself doing anything else now," said Shelley.
