Relocating to Wangaratta and undertaking the Diploma in Horse Studies (Breeding), run by the National Centre for Equine Education, was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Whilst leaving family and friends in Melbourne to live and study in the country for two years seemed a little daunting, I believed that if you want to learn about the horse industry, you have to go where it all happens.
The education I received at the NCEE's Christensen Lane Campus was excellent. The staff at the Christensen Lane Park Lane Stud were dedicated to the students and were always willing to help with any queries or concerns we had in relation to our studies.
As a relative novice at the commencement of the course I know it was the constant encouragement I received from everyone associated with the course that allowed me to learn so much and progress as far as I did.
The two year course covers all facets of equine breeding from basic stable management to foaling down the NCEE ’s own mares. There are also classes in the second year including Horse Law, which was one of my favourite subjects as it brings out a whole new side to the industry.
All of these classroom lectures plus the practical experience that we gained are the reasons why so many former students have excelled within the thoroughbred industry. There are so many studs around Australia which welcome students from the course to either spend a few weeks for work placement or a permanent position.
At the conclusion of the course I was awarded the Irish National Stud Scholarship and I was totally overwhelmed.
Being given the opportunity to travel to Ireland and undertake the six month thoroughbred breeding course was an exciting and wonderful experience. The 26 students that enrolled in the course were from all around the world and it is a special feeling knowing that these people will be friends for life.
The experience of being at the Irish National Stud was everything that I expected. I learnt so much about thoroughbred breeding in the northern hemisphere and I will always be grateful to the NCEE and the North East Breeders in Victoria for the opportunity.
Whilst overseas I was offered a job at Coolmore Australia for the 2006 Breeding Season, which I accepted with great excitement.
I am focused on expanding my knowledge in the thoroughbred industry, and look forward to completing an equine veterinary nursing course which will help me reach my goal of managing a foaling/intensive care unit at a thoroughbred stud in Australia.
For anyone looking to learn about the thoroughbred industry, I highly recommend the National Centre for Equine Education. I went into the course a "born and raised" city girl and graduated with a love of the horse industry and a knowledge that the country is now where I belong.
