Patrick Keane

Certificate II in Racing (Stablehand)

Patrick Keane grew up around horses as his dad is a trainer and from the age of 10 was involved in the family business. The 16 year old always knew he would have a career in the equine industry and commenced his formal training with the Certificate II in Racing (Stablehand) as a pre-apprentice in 2007 through the NCEE.

Patrick says being able to combine training with full time work at Doug Harrison Racing at Cranbourne was the best of both worlds. "It wasn't really hard at all, I had one day of school work and the training was done at my workplace. I used workbooks to complete the Certificate course and enjoyed subjects like horse anatomy which are important to understand," says Patrick.

Patrick's NCEE trainer, Rod Kent, says Patrick was an excellent student and provided thorough answers with all his assignments. "Not only was he academically excellent but his skills and knowledge flowed through to his practical work."

Patrick is currently undertaking a jockey apprenticeship and acknowledges the pre-apprenticeship provided a fantastic grounding for this next stage of his career. "My aim is to become a top jockey within four years."
